Netflix’s nostalgia-laced mega hit “Stranger Things” gets another chapter in its universe written by Dark Horse Publishing. With Jody Houser at the creative helm, this new series will explore what happened to Will Byers and the mysterious time he spent in the Upside Down during the first season of the show. Celebrating the kickoff of the Dark Horse series, Lucio Parrillo has done an exclusive variant for Sanctum Sanctorum.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Comic Burst: Do you prefer working by hand or digitally? How do you approach the need in modern publishing for all works to be in digital form before going to press?
Lucio Parrillo: I love using a mixture of techniques when I create. The Stranger Things #1 cover in particular was a mixture of traditional and digital styles. With a piece like that, I begin with a mix of purely traditional techniques: pencil, pens, acrylics, oil. Then I’ll either take a picture or scan it so that I can use some digital features with software to accentuate what I've already created. I generally prefer painting however. That is my favorite style; I prefer oils and acrylics mostly.
CB: Were you familiar with “Stranger Things" before being commissioned to create the variant cover?
LP: I do not watch a lot of television. I am a very busy man with my art, as I'm always working and creating. When I'm not in my studio, I prefer to be outside, engaging with people in the real world, as I don't often have a lot of time to do so.
CB: When and where will it be available? and will you be making any signing appearances?
LP: You will find it at Sanctum Sanctorum and Scott’s Collectibles. The variant is on presale now, I believe, and is in production.
CB: Will you have any signed copies available? Or signing appearances?
LP: There will be signed copies available with remarks from me. For appearances, I am unsure at this time but will update everyone as I find out myself.
CB: Are you working on any more “Stranger Things" variant covers?
LP: For the moment I'm not too sure if I will be doing more. I'd definitely like to, as I had a lot of fun with this one and enjoyed doing it.
Stranger Things #1 comes out Sept 26th 2018. The Lucio Parrillo variant cover can purchased on the Sanctum Sanctorum website or at their physical store located at 15071 Northville Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170
